Scholarship Awards
TPFSL has renewed our focus on the scholarship portion of the organization, while continuing our mission of Igniting community leadership and social change through education and empowerment. To this end our focus is on our scholarship programs.

Previous Structure: TPFSL supported up to 7 TPFSL ‘chapters’ within Sierra Leone through varying means depending on what their needs were. In addition to this, TPFSL would award post-secondary scholarships to the most deserving applicants who were members of those chapters.

New Structure: We have begun a process which will strengthen our emphasis on the scholarship portion of the organization and decrease our involvement in the activities of the local chapters. This also allows us to adapt to our current COVID and post COVID realites, as chapter activities can no longer be used as a core scholarship criteria. Over time, the goal is that TPFSL’s focus on community and leadership development will continue through the scholarship recipients themselves, and that we will no longer be affiliated directly with the TPFSL chapters. We will integrate into our program’s support for community development projects through encouragement and support of our scholarship recipients in taking on action-learning or community-building projects.
Thank you to our community leaders who supported our past TPFSL chapters across Sierra Leone in Freetown, Waterloo, Kabala, Bo, Makeni and Kenema. We look forward to seeing your continued leadership across Sierra Leone.
We will be updating our 2021/2022 application process as universities respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic and application processes are confirmed.

Stay tuned for details.

Mentoring Project
Based on an inclusive manual created by our team, youth go through workshops in order to become community mentors. After successfully completing the workshops, they find a leader in the community to mentor them, and they also find a younger student to work with! Mentoring is important because it enables youth to receive realistic, practical advice about the real challenges they face, and also helps them to express their opinions and become an advocate.

HIV/AIDS Sensitization
One of our most passionate and important projects, the HIV/AIDS sensitizations are carried out in rural communities and run as open, free events that anyone can attend. Our youth have created a mixture of drama, spoken word, song, and discussions in order to engage the most people possible about this important issue. TPFSL recently received a grant from Rotary International, and will be using this grant to grow our HIV/AIDS Sensitizations and make them more accessible and understandable for those in very remote areas. By taking down misconceptions and providing real information in a sensitive way in local languages, our youth are engaging communities with this important issue.

Youth Conferences
Included in our goals is not only to train youth to take on leadership, but to create an environment where youth from different cultures and backgrounds can learn and share in a safe space, brainstorming ways to create change in the world around them while also learning how to change themselves and overcome their own struggles. We do this through youth conferences – after hosting two cross-cultural conferences in 2013, where we brought North American and Sierra Leonean youth together to learn from each other, we look forward to an upcoming conference in 2019-2020.
